Salt, sun, oxidation

Miami eats
gelcoat.

Gelcoat is porous. Salt works its way in and stays there, and UV breaks down the resin at the surface until it goes chalky and powders off on your hand. That is oxidation, and in South Florida it starts within a season on an unprotected hull.

It is not permanent — chalky gelcoat cuts back and the color comes straight home again. But every season you leave it, more material has to come off to reach good gelcoat underneath, and there is only so much of it.

A wash and wax every three or four months keeps a hull ahead of the sun and is a fraction of what a full compounding job costs once the fade sets in.

The Process

How we work a hull.

Wash, assess, cut, protect. The assessment stage is where you find out whether you have a polishing job or a compounding job — and you hear it before we quote the final number.

  1. Salt-off rinse and wash

A full freshwater flush and marine-safe wash from rail to waterline. Salt left sitting in gelcoat pores is what starts the chalky fade in the first place.

  2. Assess the gelcoat

We check how far the oxidation has gone. A light haze polishes out; heavy chalking needs compounding. You get told which one you have before any compounding starts.

  3. Compound and polish

Oxidized gelcoat is cut back with marine compound, then refined until the color comes back. This is the step that turns a chalky hull glossy again.

  4. Wax and protect

Marine wax or sealant over the whole hull, plus rails, deck and vinyl. Florida sun is relentless — protection is what buys you time before the next cut.
